Anam Cara

“You are my anam cara, you heal my heart and mind,
You recognize my goodness, you’re gentle and kind.
You’ll be my anam cara until the very end,
More than a companion, you are my soul’s true friend.”

Anam Cara

The term "Anam Cara" is Gaelic and means "soul friend." A soul friend is a person who supports us in our life’s journey. Being such a friend to another is the highest form of human love.
Jesus spoke of love as the great moral principle. Love is the greatest commandment. The greatest love is to give your life for another. Love and death are intimately linked. In some ways, love is death, the surrender of the self to the other. God so loved the world that he surrendered his own Son to die for our sins.
Love is a tumble, a descent which can be life’s greatest joy and sorrow. Thousands of poems and songs remind us that love hurts. Love is a gift of God, so bright and so intense that it blinds our eyes and scorches our skin. Love is intense because of our knowledge of death. Out of fear that love fades and dies, many today are afraid to commit themselves to love. But to refuse love is to refuse life.

All of us are perfect when we are born. Infants are not passive recipients of love. By nature, we are not just human beings but human lovings. Love is as natural to the heart and soul as food is to the stomach. Without love, we begin to wither and die.

Jesus came to heal the wounded heart. He is the ultimate "Anam Cara", the friend of our soul. Jesus balanced justice with mercy, discipline with compassion, judgment with forgiveness. Jesus suffered doubt and fear, but he also taught us that death is not the end of the story. Like Jesus, we can rise again.

When someone we love dies, we are in a state of shock and denial. We may then become depressed or angry. Eventually the grief process leads to acceptance and celebration. Funerals should be a celebration. Death is not the end of love but the beginning. God’s love is eternal. The love we give to one another is a mirror of God’s love and will last forever in our memory.
In the Fall of the year in New England, we witness the glorious process of death and rebirth. Like the autumn leaves, humans shine the brightest as we near our end. Soon after it will be Winter and life will turn cold and gray. But, just as the Spring will eventually return, love too is reborn over and over. It is a renewable resource, nurtured by our loved ones, the "anam caras" in our life. As the old spiritual reminds us, "the circle remains unbroken." Earth is our temporary home, but God has reserved a place in the sky where all questions will be answered, all suffering relieved, all wounds healed, a place where peace and love will reign forever.

Building a bridge of peace and love begins within the human heart and soul. Every infant is a peacemaker, naturally equipped to disarm adults. Tragically, it is these same adults who often inflict harm on their children. The child becomes bitter and the victim becomes a persecutor, continuing the pattern of violence into the next generation. What legacy will we leave the next generation?
We hear a great deal about the "greatest generation", the men and women who bravely fought in World War II. There was a member of this generation who was know more for his peace efforts than his wartime heroics. After the war, he was suspected of being a communist, but no one loved this country more than Woody Guthrie. What Woody saw was not just a country for the haves, but also for the have-nots, the migrant workers of the dust bowl years. I came to know about Woody Guthrie from his widow, Marjorie. After Woody died of Huntington’s Disease, Marjorie took up the cause of helping those who suffered from chronic, degenerative illness.
Woody Guthrie inspired a new generation of troubadours including Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Paul Simon, and Bruce Springsteen. In an album entitled "The Ghost of Tom Joad", Springsteen recalled the hero of John Steinbeck’s "The Grapes of Wrath" who was immortalized by Woody Guthrie in "The Ballad of Tom Joad". Tom was a simple man, accused of a crime and forced to run. When he was asked by his mother where he was going, he said "wherever people are fighting for their rights, that’s where I’m gonna be, Ma." Steinbeck took his title from the Battle Hymn of the Republic which concludes with the line: "He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free." That is what Woody and Marjorie Guthrie did.
I was privileged to work with Marjorie a short time before she died, and she encouraged me to write songs for people in hospitals and their families. I wrote a collection of songs called "Hope to Cope", which was one of Marjorie’s favorite phrases. For me, music has continued to be both a bridge and a river. Music is the bridge of faith that carries us across troubled water. It connects past and future, the dead and the living. Music is also a river of love that sweeps us to God’s eternal sea. When we surrender to the mighty force of God’s love, we become one with humankind and there is no further need for war.
This collection of songs is about the confluence of matter and spirit, the temporal and the eternal. It is about bridges and rivers, the structures and forces that connect and unite all of us. It is a journey from birth to death and all the seasons between. Ultimately, it is a story of renewal, rebirth and the healing power of love and grace.

I may have the gift of inspired preaching, I may have all knowledge and understand all secrets. I may have all the faith needed to move mountains - but if I have no Love, I am nothing."
