Virginia Boatman
Nellie Virginia
Miller Boatman, one of the original incorporators of Good News was also the
founder of the Good News Food Pantry and organizer of numerous fund raising
events including numerous renowned bake sales featuring her down home much
sought after baked goods. She was born November 17, 1920 in Glen Morgan, Raleigh County, West Virginia,
the 4th of 10 children born to Harvey Henderson Miller, a railroad conductor,
and Mary James O’Dell. Information about her
faith inspiring album Mountain
Songs And Lullabies can be provided by clicking the hyperlink below. As a teenager she sang in the church choir in Beaver,
WV with her sister, Margaret. Her grandmother, Bertie Morton Green O’Dell,
bought Virginia her first guitar when she was a teenager, and she learned to
play from her older brother, Howard. The Miller children inherited the musical
talents of their Irish mother, Mary Miller, along with Mary’s love of God and
family. The West Virginia Appalachian mountain rhythms on Virginia's album are combined with an Irish
heritage that creates faith filled songs that warm the heart and soul.
The authentic Appalachian music on this CD was
recorded when Virginia was 72 years of age. She continued to sing and play her
guitar until her 78th year in regular church services at the Good News Chapel in
the hills of New Hampshire.
She married Samuel Arthur Boatman, Jr., January 21,
1939, when she was 18, and was the mother of two daughters, Carolyn Barber, R.N.
and Rev. Dr. Mary Johnson. She had 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Her heritage of joy, love, and faith remains alive in her unique Appalachian
songs.
Virginia
went to sing with the heavenly chorus on October 2, 2000, but her songs will
live in us forever. For more information, see:
